A Home Of Glass And Stone Perched Above San Francisco Bay
Swatt | Miers Architects designed a remodel and extension for the Garay Residence in Tiburon, California.
The owners had lived in Tiburon, California for many years, dreaming of one day transforming their low, one story home into a setting befitting their spectacular site perched above San Francisco Bay. Their dreams began to be realized in 2005 with the design of a 2000 square foot addition, coupled with a complete renovation of the existing 3,200 square foot house.
The site is a half-acre south-facing hillside parcel, with unobstructed views of San Francisco Bay to the south, east and west. Responding to the physical conditions of the site, the new house is almost entirely opaque on the north side where a new entrance motor court is defined by a rhythm of five ‘free-standing’ stone-clad walls.

Box Offices – San Francisco
FENNIE+MEHL Architects Box San Francisco on the 13th and 26th floors of 100 First Street. Size 30,374 sqft
The challenge to F+M co-founder Ned Fennie and designer Jackie Guasco was to stay true to the Box brand and culture — fun, energetic, no holds barred — while keeping in mind that the 26th floor will one day become an important executive briefing center. In the meantime, new hires are arriving apace, and recruitment and retention are paramount.
A moody cocoon of wood and raw metal announces a design departure in the elevator lobby on the 26th floor. Just beyond is a glowing blue corridor. A jagged recess in the concrete floor is also lighted in blue: eye candy for visitors. Each conference room pays whimsical homage to an important Box event, and geometrical carpet patterns unify the look.
